A review of the Lego Technic #42093 – Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 from a builder perspective.

Context

This set was acquired via the Registered Lego Fan Media Support Program, in a review purpose. I am anyway totally free of what I will say on this set. This is the first time I make a set review, but as you may know, I am not a collector. I usually buy set for the parts and interesting building techniques, so more for the rebuild potential than the set itself. That is why I will not make a classic review, as many people already do it in a brilliant way.

I will rather focus on different points and questions from a builder perspective, in the same way I ask myself if I have to buy a set or not :

  • How the partlist is good ?
  • How this set is good for a beginner builder ?
  • How the set is good for alternate model ?
  • How this set is good for completing a parts collection ?

If you want anyway to see a review of the assembled set, I recommend  this review, from the best Lego Technic review channel to me : Racingbricks.

Partlist Star_rating_4_of_5

The inventory is composed of 579 parts (see inventory on rebrickable), available for now at 39.99€ on the Lego Shop which gives a €/parts ratio of 0.069€/parts which is a good ratio for a non-motorised and licensed set regarding its size.

Where the 42093 is interesting is about how the inventory is homogeneous and easy to use. In deed, this set has orange parts including panels, beam but also connectors in the homogeneous way, which means that when you want to make something with it, you have all you need to make something in orange, without the lack of a basic part such a beam or connector or a symmetrical panel.

Indeed, the fact that you have 4 symmetrical mudguard for instance enable you to rebuild vehicles (not like the 42098 car transporter which has only two red mudguards for instance), but also with the two curved and side panels which can easily be use for bodywork. There are also small orange panels in 2 quantity each which is interesting because it is one of the most useful panel to make small shape or fill a hole.  The limitation about the orange parts would be certainly the unique flex axle and the 3×11 panel for the hood, making theses parts hard to reuse, or only on non symmetrical shape (or in combination with the black panels).

The last limitation I find is about the gears. Of course the model as only two functions but I wonder why Lego did not add an extra 12t (simple or double bevem) gear in order to have a symmetrical number and be used for aesthetic instead of functions (as on the classic car from Grohl).

Perfect for a beginner ? Star_rating_5_of_5

As shown before, the inventory is rather good for the price, and especially for the beginner in Lego. First because it gives all necessary parts to build other vehicles without too much frustration to only have a small collection or as a first set. Secondly because now the Rebrickable alternate builds are really interesting : there are many available builds to do with this inventory. It will help beginner to enhance skills and curiosity. I recommend for that the alternate model from Grohl which is nice and free. It is also a perfect gift for a Chevrolet or car lover thanks to its low price and iconic shape.

Perfect for the parts collection ? Star_rating_3.5_of_5

On a side, the set has interesting parts such as the mudguards and nice orange inventory for a pretty good ratio of €/parts. But in the other side you need only one time for having the interested parts and it can not be combined with other set really well : the 42056 Porsche for instance has not many beams but the it has many more panels and flex. Therefore, if you buy the #42093, you will basically use the parts for making same things as the original set : a small vehicle. Nevertheless I find the price pretty fair and with a discount it will become a very nice set to own. That is why I will recommend to have this set, for the original model, for all the alternate builds which exist, and for the parts.
